CNWA is the peer review scientific journal, with international editorial board, edited in English and/or Spanish.
The history of the journal goes back to the 1970s. Between 1977 and 1982 several fascicles under the title Polish Contribution in New World Archaeology were published by the Archaeological Commission of the Cracow Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences. They presented results of the first archaeological work conducted by Polish scholars in South America and the Antilles. Polish Constributions series was established as a need to address the new subject of archaeology of North and South America, which were previously beyond the scope of Polish archaeology. After 1982 the series was suspended and it was not until 2008 that it was reactivated. The need to resume its publication was a consequence of the intensification of research into pre-Columbian civilizations among the scholars from the Cracow archaeological centre. Between 2008 and 2012 four fascicles of the new series were issued as common publications of the Jagiellonian University – Institute of Archaeology and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. Initially, as the title assumed, the journal published only Polish contributions to the subject of New World archaeology.
In 2012, as it is one of the few European periodicals dealing with this particular subject, we decided to change its name and open it to authors from all over the world, thereby widening the scope of the journal. From 2012 the journal appears as Contributions in New World Archaeology and has new cover design.
Moreover in 2011 the CNWA journal was presented for the evaluation lists of Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education which are called Index Copernicus. The new lists were published in 2012 in accordance with the regulation of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education of 25th May 2010 amending the regulation on criteria and procedure of granting and settling funds for statutory activities (Journal of Laws of 2010 No 93, item 599).
